A wild elephant was set on fire in Alikadam upazila of Bandarban by local residents in order to chase it away on Sunday night, when it got furious and attacked the locals.

Two people were killed and one was injured in the attack.

The deceased were identified as Mansur Alam, 17, resident of Kona Para of Chaikshyang union, and Nurul Kabir, 18, resident of Mannan Member Para. The injured was identified as Jobayer, son of Hafez Noor.

Police told Dhaka Tribune that the elephant came down Meraithang Hill and entered Futerjhiri in Mannan Member Para, when the locals surrounded it and chased it with fire.

At one stage while trying to set fire to the elephant’s body, Mansur Alam was attacked and later taken to Lama Hospital where the doctor on-duty pronounced him dead.

Nurul Kabir rushed in front of the elephant accidentally and was injured by it. He later died while being taken to Chakaria.

A Tain Range official said when the elephant entered the locality, local residents and forest department officials tried to chase it away to the hills several times.

He further said that despite repeated requests from the authorities to the locals to not obstruct the movement of wild elephants and pursue them, they did not comply and instead caused casualties as they tried to hit the elephant in various ways including trying to set it ablaze.

Ferdous Rahman, chairman of the Chaikshyang Union, said the families of the victims and injured would be given the necessary assistance and also urged everyone to work together to prevent such incidents in the future.

A group of elephants moved to Ruposi Para and then to Mannan Member Para on December 27.

Later, when the forest department and locals tried to chase them away, they moved towards Meraithang Hill. The incident took place when they were going to Ruposi Para Hill through Meraithang on Saturday night.
