Bangladesh’s first-ever hydraulic elevator dam has been inaugurated in Chittagong.

The hydraulic elevator dam has been built at the district’s Barumchara union of Anwara upazila, under a pilot project of the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) to preserve surface water for irrigation.

Agriculture Minister Dr Mohammad Abdur Razzaque virtually inaugurated the dam on Sunday from the Bangladesh Secretariat in Dhaka.

Among others, Land Minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury and Agriculture Secretary Md Nasiruzzaman, were present during the inauguration program, said a press release issued in this regard.

Under the supervision of the Agriculture Ministry, BADC constructed the dam — which is 38 metres long, four metres high and has five panels with hydraulic jacks attached — on the Bharashankha canal at a cost of Tk21 crore.

The dam is expected to help irrigate around 3,000 hectares of lands by supplying surface water reserve in six unions of the Anwara upazila, added the release.
