Dr AKM Rafique Ahammed, director general of Department of Environment (DoE), has died of Covid-19.
He breathed his last at 4:14am on Saturday while undergoing treatment at the Central Police Hospital in Dhaka’s Rajarbagh.
Senior Information Officer Dipankar Bar at the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change confirmed the news to Bangla Tribune.
Dr Rafique had been undergoing treatment at the hospital since March 23 and he was put on life support on Friday as his condition deteriorated, said Dipankar.
He left behind his wife, two sons, and a host of relatives and admirers to mourn his death.
Meanwhile, Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Md Shahab Uddin, Deputy Minister Habibun Nahar, and Secretary Ziaul Hasan expressed deep shock and sorrow at the demise of Rafique Ahammed.
They prayed for the eternal salvation of the departed soul and expressed sympathy to the bereaved family.

He started his career in Bangladesh Civil Service (Administration) Cadre in 1991 and served in a number of field and central positions for three decades.
