Unlike the local and hybrid variety, Kashmiri Apple and Ball Sundari Apple are relatively bigger, sweeter, and higher-yielding
Farmers have achieved big success while cultivating two fairly rare variants of Indian jujube (locally known as “kul”) in Parbatipur upazila of Dinajpur.
Sagar Ali Mandal has cultivated and harvested a new variety of larger jujube, known as Kashmiri Apple Kul, which has an attractive appearance and is tastier than the other jujubes available in the market.
With its reddish complexion over light yellow or green skin, Kashmiri Apple Kul is larger in shape and tastes better than other available varieties like Baukul and Thai kul. Sagar is the first farmer to cultivate Kashmiri Apple Kul in the upazila.
Sagar Ali Mandal, from Tajnagar Mandalpara under Monmothopur union, said he had bought 300 Kashmiri Apple Kul saplings from a nursery in Natore last year. He then planted the foot-long saplings in his land, used earthworm manure, and built support structures with bamboos for them. The tree flowered in November-December and the fruits matured at the end of January.
Meanwhile, Ahsan Habib, from Kheruapara under Chandipur union, has cultivated and harvested Ball Sundari Apple Kul on 2.5 bighas of land.
Farhad Mandal of Tajnagar Mandalpara village said, unlike the local and hybrid variety, the speciality of Ball Sundari Apple Ber is the size of the fruit which is bigger; it tastes very sweet, is drought-resistant, consumes less water and requires fewer insecticides and is sustainable in hot temperature too, while the yield is high.
Ahsan Habib has 700 Ball Sundari Apple Ber plants on his land. Everyday people from near and far villages and towns come here to buy jujube from his garden.
Parbatipur Upazila Agriculture Officer Md Rakibuzzaman said: Sagar Ali Mandal and Ahsan Habib are cultivating high yielding Indian jujube variants in a safe and organic way. The jujubes produced here are making their way to different parts of the country.”
