BCS cadre service stages countrywide protest

Senior government officials of 29 cadres attend at a programme organised by “Government Officials Forum” at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre on Saturday protesting the vandalism of Bangabandhu’s sculpture in Kushtia .

Government officials in a rare instance on Saturday held protest rallies across the country, including in the capital, pledging to uphold the dignity of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and not allow anyone to defame the architect of independent Bangladesh.
With the slogan ‘Jatir Pitar Samman, Rakhbo Mora Amlan’ (We will uphold the dignity of the Father of the Nation), officials of 29 cadres under Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS), the protest programmes were held under the banner of “Government Officers Forum.”
Non-cadre officials were also present in those programmes.
Similar rallies were also held in divisional cities, district towns and at upazila levels.
All these were coordinated by the Bangladesh Administrative Service Association, an organisation of the BCS (Administration) cadre formed in 1981.
Besides in Chattogram, around 100 judges of different courts there formed a human chain in the port city’s Dampara area over the same reason.
Saturday’s series of protests were part of ongoing demonstrations across the country following the damaging of an under-construction sculpture of Bangabandhu in Kushtia on December 5.
In the capital Dhaka, the government officials’ programme was held at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre.
Speaking at the gathering at BICC, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Dr Ahmad Kaikaus said, “We will not allow anyone insult or disrespect to the Father of the Nation in our lifetime. This is our pledge for today.”
Dr Ahmad Kaikaus also said: “We are the servants of the people. The Father of the Nation remains in our Constitution. Our responsibility is to uphold the Constitution. If we exist, there [should be] no change of undermining of the Father of the Nation. We have come to be committed before the whole nation, we will not allow such an incident to happen.”
Calling everyone to say the words — “Joy Bangla” from now on, Dr Ahmad Kaikaus said that the words are derived from the Liberation War.
From now on, permission will be sought from the government if necessary to use the words, he said.
Helal Uddin Ahmed, president, Bangladesh Administration Service Association and Senior Secretary, LGRD ministry gave a welcome speech at the programme.
In his speech, he said Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman is constitutionally recognised as the Father of the Nation, and Bangabandhu and independence are closely intertwined.
“Any kind of attack and any insult against Bangabandhu will not be tolerated”.
Speaking at the programme, Dr Benazir Ahmed, Inspector General, Bangladesh Police said, “We become speechless to condemn the heinous act of carrying out attack on the sepulture of Bangabandhu in the dark night. The attack on Bangabandhu sculpture is tantamount to an attack on the country’s constitution and attack on the
state. The attack on the Constitution and the state would be dealt with an iron hand.”
The IGP said, “No one will be allowed to touch (harm) the independence, constitution, state and people. We, along with 18 crore countrymen and state, will resist everything.”
The IGP added: “We are witnessing that when the country is going ahead under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, evil attempts are being carried out repeatedly to push the country backward.”
He warned the perpetrators, saying, “Do not dare to go against the state. Because opposing the state means going against 18 crore people.”
Food Secretary Dr Nazmanara Khanum, Bangladesh Foreign Service Association President and Additional Foreign Secretary Syed Masud Mahmud Khandker, Law and Justice Division Joint Secretary Bikash Kumar Saha, BCS Health Cadre Association President Dr AM Selim Reza, Secondary and Higher Education Directorate Director General Prof Syed Md Golam Faruque, BCS Information Association President and Films and Publications Department Director General SM Golam Kibria, representatives of BCS Agriculture Cadre Association, BCS Telecom Association, BCS Roads and Highways Engineers Association, BCS Customs and VAT Association, BCS Taxation Association, BCS Audit and Accounts Association and other associations addressed the rally.
Besides, Prime Minister’s Speech Writer and BCS (Information) Betar Officers Welfare Association President Md Nazrul Islam also spoke on the occasion while Additional LGRD and Cooperatives Secretary Mezbah Uddin moderated the rally.
