Local journalists organised a human chain in Habiganj on Saturday protesting a case filed against two local reporters under the Digital Security Act by a fisheries officer.

Baniachong upazila Fisheries Officer Md Alom filed the case against Chowdhury Md Masud Ali Forhad , a local correspondent of Masranga Television, and Badrul Alom, the district correspondent of the news portal Bangla News.

The human chain was organized before the Habiganj Press Club under the banner of  TV Journalists Association on Saturday afternoon.  More than two hundred journalists from different print and electronic media took part there.

Terming the case false and baseless , the protesters demanded its withdrawal. Otherwise, they vowed to go for a tougher movement. The journalists also demanded divisional action against the fisheries officer.

Habiganj TV Journalist Association President Rasel Chowdhury said: “We will continue our movement if the case is not withdrawn.”

According to the journalists who were present at the human chain, local residents filed a complaint with the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) and the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock against Baniachong upazila Fisheries Officer Md Alom, accusing him of involvement in corruption. The news was published in various newspapers.

Later, Fisheries Officer Md Alom filed an application before the Habiganj Senior Judicial magistrate Court asking that a case be against some journalists. The court rejected the plea, stating that the matter did not fall under its jurisdiction.

However, last February, Md Alom filed a case against some people, including the two local journalists, with the Dhaka Cyber Tribunal.
