A leopard cat died after being crushed under the wheels of a vehicle while crossing a road in Janakichhara area of Lawachhara forest in Moulvibazar’s Kamalganj upazila today.
The leopard cat was run over by a vehicle in the morning, Divisional Forest Officer Rezaul Karim Chowdhury confirmed to our Moulvibazar correspondent.
After completing the necessary work, the leopard cat will be buried, said Rezaul Karim, also of Wildlife Management and Nature Conservation Division in Sylhet.
Leopard cats are nocturnal animals and this animal is endangered due to various obstacles including destruction of habitat and food crisis, he said.
Leopard cats are protected under the Wildlife Act of Bangladesh and the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) has included this animal on its red list, he added.
Shamsul Haque, joint convener of Lawachhara Bon O Jiboboichitro Rokkha Andolan, said a number of animals are often run over and killed in Lawacharra forest area and very few of the incidents come to light.
Wild animals need a corridor as they come out from the jungle at night in search of food, he added.
Many vehicles use the 15-kilometre Kamalganj-Sreemangal road and rail route passing through the reserve forest area, which often causes such deaths, he further said.
