Nomadic pastoralists get financial boost for dairy farming – KBC | Kenya’s Watching

Meru Highlands has partnered with Kenya Climate Innovation Centre in a deal that targets dairy farming among the nomadic pastoralist in Meru County.

The company is looking to set up and upgrade the yoghurt processing facility and mechanize the yoghurt production process to provide customers with nutritious farm-based yoghurt working with a network of over 700 farmers.

Dairy farming in the arid and semi-arid areas is not a first alternative for the people of Northern part of Meru County. However, Meru Highlands Limited is changing the norm for this nomadic livelihood.

By assuring them of income through a guaranteed market, the company offers a better alternative for the nomads. It also invests in teaching them best dairy farming practices.

In addition, it offers artificial insemination services at cost as well as link them with feed milling cooperatives to source for quality and affordable feeds at negotiated prices.
