Police on Monday foiled a march of the Left Democratic Alliance towards the Prime Minister’s office demanding reopening of 25-state owned jute mills.

Police intercepted the marchers near Intercontinental Hotel in Dhaka and charged batons to disperse the protesters.

LDA leaders and activists started their prescheduled programme from the front of the National Press Club following a rally.

Police put up a barricade across the road to impede the march near Zia Shishu Park at Shahbagh, but the protesters crossed the barricade and started proceeding towards the PMO.

When the procession reached Intercontinental Hotel hundreds of police attacked the procession and stopped the marchers there.

Several marchers were wounded in police action.

The marchers of LDA, a combine of eight left-wing political parties, however, later sat on the street and held a short rally there.

The coordinator of the combine and central leader of Socialist Party of Bangladesh Bazlur Rashid Firoz announced countryside road block programme on October 19 to press their demand of reopening of 25 stateowned jute mills that were closed on July 2.

The alliance also announced that it would hold countrywide demonstrations today protesting at the police action of the march.

It also said that it would hold a protest rally in front of the National Press Club at 4:00pm today.
