Hundreds of local residents staged a demonstration before Madarganj police station, Jamalpur, on Saturday.

The protest was organised to demand the release of seven farmers who were arrested in a case filed on allegations of obstructing the construction work of a jute research sub centre in Madarganj upazila.

Shanta Mandol, Nazrul Islam, Ranju Miah, Joynal Abedin, Hafizur Rahman and Masum Miah were arrested on Friday after the scientific officer of the project, Muktadir Hossain, filed a case accusing 40 named and 40/45 unnamed people with Madarganj police station.

According to locals, a jute research sub centre is being set up on 34.5 acres of land in Kamari mouja under Balijuri union in Madarganj upazila. The project authorities had assured local residents that compensation would be paid to them before their land was acquired.

However, the project authorities provided compensation to some of the locals while many others did not get it. As a result, locals have been voicing their protests over the construction work for the last few months.

On Friday, Muktadir Hossain filed a case, upon which the police subsequently arrested seven farmers.

Regarding the allegations, project director Mahamud Al Hossain said, “We have bought 34.5 acres of khas land from the Deputy Commissioner at a cost of Tk 4.95 crore.”

This newspaper tried to contact DC Mohammad Enamul Haque in order to get his comments on the issue, but he did not respond to the telephone call.
